The Four Stages of Desire: From Everything to One Thing | Psychology Today

Desire is an essential component of the human experience. Without it, we would never do anything — we wouldn't seek out food when we're hungry; we wouldn't strive to better ourselves as people; we wouldn't chase adventure; we wouldn't fall in love... in short, we wouldn't have any interest in experiencing all the things that make life worth living. But having too many desires, scattered and insubstantial, can also lead to dissatisfaction and lack of focus.

The 15th-century Indian mystic, poet and philosopher Kabir had a thing or two to say about this. To him, desire constitutes the true wealth of humanity, and can be viewed in four stages. There are some people who have countless desires; some who have many; still others who have just a few; and finally, those rare souls that have only one desire. According to him, what motivates you in life depends largely on the stage of desire that you are in, and the main goal ought to be to achieve that last one — clear, focused devotion towards a single desire. How do we do this, you ask? Check out the full article, linked above, to find out!
