The CURIOSITY Issue

EDITOR’S LETTER

Growing up, one of my great heroes was (and still is) my dad.

He is one man whose curiosity knows no bounds. Anything that catches his attention, he dives into with wholehearted enthusiasm, whether it’s music, quantum physics, medicine, business, law, entrepreneurship, self-development, numerology, astrology, spirituality, technology, neuropsychology, nutrition… the list is quite literally endless. He has the most eclectic bookshelf I’ve ever seen. His impressions of people are hilarious and absolutely spot-on because of how keenly he observes and delights in people’s quirks and mannerisms. He can hold a conversation with practically anyone simply because he takes so much of an interest in people, and what they do and love and enjoy. He’s produced and directed an award-winning musical, closed multimillion dollar deals, coached people to the highest levels of achievement and so much more, because his curiosity and hunger for all that life has to offer is so immense. I truly admire him and this spirit of discovery he has, and am happy to say that I am very much my father’s daughter. How could I not be? Curiosity is highly contagious, and very much worth spreading. #spreadcuriositynotcovid

These days, my curiosity is stronger than ever in light of recent events both global and personal. Suddenly I’m on fire to learn more about health and wellness, the environment, psychology, creativity, inequality, sexuality, culture and so much more. I’m eager to read, watch, hear, absorb and imbibe any wisdom I can get my hands on. I want to meet people, have conversations, and unearth hidden treasures within myself and others. I feel like I’m on the brink of my own personal Big Bang, and am just accumulating as much information and experience as possible to best prepare myself for it. I’m excited for what I have yet to discover, impatient to see what’s going to happen next, and yet enjoying every single moment as it comes.

I’m excited to share this issue of BRAZEN with you, an ode to and celebration of curiosity in all its mischievous, insatiable, playful and unpredictable glory. This month, we speak to a neurosurgeon and chief of surgery whose curiosity has led him to branch out into multiple other fields — engineering, finance, business and music to name a few. We have a charming story about a cat who uses up all nine of its lives in the name of sheer curiosity. We explore how to best harness our curiosity for the better in this age of technology and distraction. We dive into how curiosity can lead to love, both for others and for ourselves. And we become curious about curiosity itself, through our usual experiments, questions and quotes for you to explore in your own time.

It’s a great issue we have for you this month, and I can’t wait for you to read it. So I’ll leave you to it now with this gorgeous quote I came across, which also serves as my wish for you:

“May you always have a beautiful soul with a fierce demeanour and a curiosity to know.”
